The countdown begins….

It’s been another crazy fortnight it’s been! A nerve-racking time now as we’re so close to finising the build of the new platform but it feels like there’s so much still do and to consider. There’s just 4 weeks to go now and all hands are to the pump to test out the new site, identify the bugs (those pesky things) and get them ironed out. Test, log, fix, test again, sign off. Test, log, fix, test again, sign off – it’s a repetitive and laborious but necessary part of the process and we’ll be sooooo glad when it’s over.

So, although we conducted some initial user testing, and guaged feedback from a selection of members through the re-platforming and design process, the nerves are setting in now as to what the wider CitySocialising community will think and how everyone will take to the new site and layout. Some people really don’t like change (think Facebook redesign), others do, but as our members are a laid-back and forward-thinking bunch we shouldn’t have too much to worry about. Essentially, the changes have been made to improve the CS experience for them, but most importantly to make it even easier for CitySocialisers to connect with the new friends that suit them and more easily organise and enjoy the social events and activities that they’re into.

But any new website should be seen as a living, breathing thing (according to the guys at Nomensa!) so our Beta version, when we launch, will undergo a gradual process of tweaks and improvements, driven by feedback from our members of course, to get it to a place where everyone is happy. We have so many other great ideas in the pipeline that it’s going to be tough to know what to do first.

Plus, we’re launching the network in 5 new cities/regions so lots of work going on here to get these going in the meantime.  Last year we had loads of requests from people in Liverpool, Cardiff, Newcastle, Sheffield and Reading/Oxford to open a CitySocialising network in their area and we’re finally ready to do it. News of our launch events to follow here soon….

Over the past 3 days our London team has been taking it in turns to attend the fantastic Internet World exhibition at Earls Court. I went along on Tuesday and it was heaving – much much busier than last year which shows that the internet is becoming an even bigger place to do business. I managed to get myself into a few excellent seminars, including one run by Nomensa (usability experts) and The London Paper who have recently launched their brand new website. Some very interesting stuff on how important it is to test, monitor and really understand the user experience in order to apply it to your site through the structure and design. It’s something that we didn’t have the resources to undertake comprehensively before building our new platform but is something we’re definitely going to work in to our plan once it launches.

Other exciting news includes our new Head of Online Marketing, Christian Kudzi, starting with us yesterday. So far, CitySocialising’s community has grown through word-of-mouth – our members are a talkative bunch thats for sure – and from searching through Google. We intentionally stayed pretty much under the radar since we launched so we could really learn about who our customers were and what they wanted to do and now we’re ready to start shouting a bit more and inviting others who may not have a friend of a friend who is a member already. Christian’s going to be working his magic to invite lots of new, laid-back, sociable, fun-loving and like minded people to the network to come and socialise with us and each other! Watch this space.

CitySocialising nominated as EBAN finalist – great news!

So not only did we manage to raise early-stage investment in these financially grey times, but we’ve also been nominated as a finalist in the Best Cross Border Deal category at the 4th Annual EBAN awards – which is the European Association for Business Angels and Early-stage Invetsors!! The awards are taking place in Madrid at the end of the month but I won’t be able to go (boo hoo) as will be working with the team here on the final stages of the build of the new site (woo hoo).

I should explain that the investment raised was from a syndicate of nine investors, mostly from the London Business Angels network, but during my mission for money for CitySocialising I, by chance, got invited to pitch at a European Investment Conference organised by EBAN that took place in Sophia Antipolis in Nice.

What an experience that was! Firstly, I’m ashamed to say, that it was only my second time in France (the first being when I was 11 and on a day-trip to Normandy) and I was really excited at going as I’d always wanted to visit Nice. However, my first ever presentation the week before to 70 investors from the London Business Angels network at the Royal Bank of Scotland – before its windows were smashed – was tough enough so I was gut-wrenchingly nervous knowing that I was to stand up and present our investment proposition in front of  investors from all over Europe….

But, as the plane was coming down to land and I caught a glimpse of the stunning  Côte d’Azur and the gorgeous sunny weather outside, my excitement came back. When I got to the conference centre and saw around 100 investors and that I was the only female CEO, and the youngest, out of twenty or so businesses that were presenting, the excitement soon disappeared and was replaced by a bit of fear.

The pitches were to take place over 2 days and as mine was scheduled for the 2nd day I managed to pick up a few tips and it gave me a chance to get used to the new environment.

On the evening of the first night EBAN organised a lovely canapes and drinks in a stunning chateau on the Côte d’Azur. Surrounded by investors and loads of really suave and sophisticated European business people I felt like I was in a bit of a dream but it was a great night.

The actual presentation went by in a bit of a blur – the lights were really bright and hot so I couldnt really see out into the crowd which was a good thing – I received some good questions afterwards and a really positive response to what CitySocialising has achieved after ‘boot-strapping’ it for a couple of years, and finally made it back to London late that night exhausted. To cut a VERY long story short, it was at the EBAN conference that I met a couple of our lovely investors from Finland who I continued engaging with after I came back to London and this culminated with them investing in the business along with the rest of the syndicate and the rest is history.

Thinking back to looking out on the Côte d’Azur full of nerves as the plane landed, never in a million years would I have believed that we would be nominated as a finalist by EBAN for the Best Cross Border Deal! Funny. But a great feeling to see how far we’ve come.

IT’s really happening.

So the final stamp of us being a proper business comes today with the arrival of our IT equipment – the office is in disarray….frantically trying to get work done whilst a friendly man from HardSoft (good name) plays about around us with wires, PCs, Macs and screens getting us “kitted out” and ready for super action.

Today is also Kristine’s last day with CitySocialising – she’s been our London Editor for 9 months and has kept things going well considering she was thrown in the deep end! Kris is heading back to her home town of Liverpool where the rent is SO much cheaper than in London and in her place steps in Alex.

Also today, Carla our new Operations Assistant has started with us! She’s come to us from Tender, a charity that delivers domestic violence prevention programmes to schools, where she was the Administrator and Campaign Coordinator, responsible for all communications and profile raising activities including events management. Carla will be cutting her Editorial teeth on one of our new city sites for Birmingham & Coventry. Plus, she’ll help set up and promote our events as well as providing all round support to the team at HQ – plus her excellent interpersonal and client-facing skills means that she’ll be our main point of contact for incoming calls, dealing with customer requirements/questions! Not much then.

Alex our new London Editor.

Carla our new Ops Assistant

So a big welcome to Carla and Alex, and a fond farewell to Kristine!

First quarter of 2009 over.

The whole CitySocialising team (apart from Christian)

The whole CitySocialising team (apart from Christian)

So today is officially the first day of the second quarter of 2009 and it feels good to be here. Where Jan – March has been an incredibly tough and demanding time, all about finishing off the groundwork, the next few months will be even more demanding and will see us put the new site and service into action. Nerve-racking times and loads to do but exciting at the same time. But, before speeding ahead it’s always good to take stock of what’s been achieved so far – so here’s a quick run-down of the main highlights of the first quarter Jan – Mar 2009:

- closed our early-stage investment round
- new site build first and second milestone releases, testing underway
- new logo designed, scrapped, designed again and finalised
- found and moved into new office space (photos to come soon)
- hired new London Editor Alexander
- hired new Tech lead Shariff
- hired new Head of Online Marketing (under wraps for now)
- hired new Operations Assistant Carla (starting next week)
- promoted Jonny to full-time Managing Editor (UK North)
- ran our most successful ever parties in London, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, Brighton and Nottingham
- finalised dates for our series of launch events across the UK in June/July 2009

A big pat on the back to the CS team who have made this all happen – now it’s time to do it all again :)

Although everyone who is starting new here will have to deal with being thrown in at the deep end – Shariff  our new Tech Lead has one of the toughest jobs in getting up to speed and will be working to bridge the gap and make sure the transition between the current site and the new site is as smooth as possible.  Shariff blinded us with his technical knowhow at the interview stage and we feel safe in his hands (no pressure Shariff) – working before for a diverse range of companies from non-profit  organisations to blue chip companies, he’s a great believer in open source solutions and will be bringing his technical wizadry to the CS table and striving to make all members’ online experience better, richer and easier.

And Alexander – well what can I say other than we’re really excited about what he’s going to bring to the table too. Coming to us all the way from Nashville, Tennessee where he produced “Nashville Edge”, an entertainment video website and blogged about the local entertainment scene, Alexander is geared up to get out and about in London and make some real waves! His professional experience background as a journalist, both print and on the web as deputy online editor for the TV giant Scripps and his love of what’s hot and not on the social scene makes him the perfect person for the job!

More staff news to come soon as Carla will be starting with us next week – but this Friday we’re gearing up to welcome the whole CS team from around the UK to HQ in London for a pow wow. We have Kay from Bristol, Sarah from Nottingham, Jonny from Manchester, Stacey from Leeds and Sandrine from Edinburgh joining the team here for the afternoon so really looking forward to that.
